Introduction: Sociology as a New Way to Study People’s Behavior

People are social animals, and their need to flock in groups that they call societies is an ultimate proof for the given fact. Though there has always been the necessity to research the society and its elements, sociology as a separate type of science appeared comparatively recently, i.e., in XIX century. Diving into the depth of sociology and learning its peculiar theories, one can finally figure out what makes society tick.

The Unique Approach and the Difference from Other Related Social Sciences

There have been a lot of attempts to define sociology. Unlike the rest of social sciences that explore the interactions between people and other objects, sociology uses a number of various tools to explore the relationships between people within a certain society, as well as laying down the laws that explain the development of society as a whole. Hence, as Sorokin claims, “Sociology can be defined as a science of culture” (Sorokin 79).

It is also important to mention that, in contrast to other social sciences, sociology embraces much greater area of study. For example, while psychology studies the specifics of people’s behavior and mental character, sociology explains the ways in which people interact and what these interactions can lead to on a global scale. As Sorokin explains, it is hard to “differentiate properly sociology from the other sciences, all of which also study human relations, social interaction, social forms, and society” (Sorokin 79).

Therefore, it can be assumed that while other social sciences study the specifics of a human being, sociology explores the results of interaction between people, evaluating the progress that the humankind in general and certain societies in particular have made so far.

Developing Sociological Awareness: Becoming a More Well-Adjusted and Sophisticated Person

On no account should sociology be denied its significance. Developing sociological awareness, one can a more socially adjusted and sophisticated person.

One of the most graphic examples of how sociological awareness can improve the quality of one’s social interaction is the one that involves working on a certain communication issue. Defined as the awareness of a face-to-face interaction (Strauss 49), it can help solve the most complicated issues that can arise in the course of communication.

For instance, in my own case, I have to admit that I need to be more open to conversations and less reserved. Therefore, in my case, the problem has been recognized owing to the techniques of sociological awareness. With the help of the latter, it will be possible to develop specific strategies that will help me become more sociable. For example, a systematic strategy for starting a conversation can be developed so that I could use my social skills in a more active manner.

Conclusion: When Sociology Offers the Key to People’s Concerns

Judging by the above-mentioned, it can be concluded that sociology is a very promising field of science. Sociology is no panacea from the scourges of the modern society, yet with its help, one can develop working solution to certain social issues. Offering an opportunity to study the way people interact and the way in which the mechanism of society works, one can finally find his/her place in the modern world.
