Greene King is a UK company regarding as one of the greatest brewing enterprises functioning for about 200 years. Greene King is the owner of several well-known brands and thousand of bubs. The company is predominantly focused on marketing, brewing, and beer selling throughout the UK. The company structure is very sophisticated; Greene King has a well-developed partnership running about 800 pubs in Wales and England. Despite the power and majestic status of the brewery owner, it has deep problems with the aspects of business ethics.

Main body

The analysis of opportunities for career-making provided by the company shows that its policy offers a wide range of occupations without any race, religion, or sex discrimination. The opportunities are equal following the business ethics of the company. Greene Keen strategies are aimed at the involvement of ambitious and energetic specialists striving to work for the company’s benefits; as the business development manager, Hugh Maloney stated, “Being an astute judge of character is essential. Having the right person running the pub day-to-day makes my role much easier”. (Caterer & Hotelkeeper, 2006) The strategies developed by Greene King chief executors demonstrate the profit increase using new pub building and recruitment system development. (Baker, 2008)

Nevertheless, the job performed by Greene King employees cannot be referred to as the safe one. According to the company news analysis, there are some cases when top managers try to hide the information from the public as to the inner work of the brewery. In 2007, one of the Greene King employees suffered burns because of the splashed oil while deep fat fryer using. As a result, the company was fined about 5,500 pounds because the pub operator is guilty. The problem is that the company fails to provide sufficient training and instructions for the safety of employees in order not to spend much time and means for this. According to the words of environmental health officer, Liz Huband, “This case has highlighted the dangers of handling hot oil in any kitchen and the importance of making sure young people are supervised correctly at work” (Walton, 2008) The example of ethical mistakes of the powerful company can be observed in various aspects of its contact with the employees. The economic slump led to the close of more than 2000 pubs leaving thousands of people without a job. It is considered to be a complete downfall through the managers of the company said, “We’re calling on people in the retail industry – especially those who are facing redundancy or have recently been made redundant – to seriously consider a career in pub management” (Bradley, 2009). “We are naturally hugely disappointed by Greene King’s decision and hope that any future developments to the site will respect the heritage of our area”, said Mark Lievers, chairman of the social issues. (Brewery to Close, 2006) This kind of rehabilitation is aimed at widening the opportunities of the skilled staff and improving the recruitment system. Though challenges in the company running are frequently suffered by the workers throughout the country; for example, Greene King was to close the brewery Hardy and Hansons in Kimberly and as a result to put out about 80 employees. Mike Benner stated, “We regard this as an unnecessary loss”; so, the employment aspect is not taken into account. (Another UK Brewery to Close, 2006)

Despite difficulties and problematic relations with the employees, Greene King, plc tries to involve as many skilled youths into its industry as possible. Terri Hardy who is the project manager says, “We want to encourage graduates to see the pub industry as an inspiring and viable career choice.” To follow this plan, the brewery’s strategies are aimed at the development of new study programs for young specialists. (Charlton, 2007)

It is necessary to underline the fact that Greene King brewery is referred to as the most influential and powerful company in the world; its beer brands are generally recognized and thousand of people work for the company. Business ethics is still open to discussion; such issues and safety and work stability are not completely regulated and take the weak position.
