Introduction

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is a well-known movie directed by Chris Columbus, which is based on the book by Rick Riordan, and it was released in 2010. The movie offers the story of young Percy Jackson who discovers his true nature when he learns he is a demigod, the son of Poseidon. The purpose of this essay is to discuss the mythological elements presented in the movie, analyze the hero archetype, divine intervention, magical weapons, and magical creatures, as they appear in The Lightning Thief.

Mythological Elements in the Movie

Since the movie is based on Riordan’s books about a boy named Percy who comes to the conclusion that his father is no one else than Poseidon, it has many elements of the ancient Greek mythology. Thus, the gods and goddesses of Olympus, divine causes for the actions of characters, as well as typical myth-based adventures and conflicts are widely shown in the movie. Following scenarios traditional for Greek mythology, Percy Jackson and his friends need to unite against the forces of evil and strive to prevent the war between the gods (Percy Jackson and the Olympians). Overall, the movie authors actively use various mythological elements in order to create a thrilling adventure movie.

The Hero Archetype

The movie features the archetype of a hero, which is often used in mythology and literature. Thus, Percy, is not an ordinary human, he possesses superhuman powers and must go through a series of trials in order to reach his goal. He embarks on a dangerous journey to uncover the mystery of Zeus’s lightning bolt theft, and he displays courage and boldness when facing the forces of evil and defending his truth. Furthermore, throughout his journey, Percy undergoes many tests which include battles with monsters and gods, making him stronger and more experienced (Percy Jackson and the Olympians). Finally, Percy shows the bravery that attracts the favor of the ancient gods.

Divine Intervention

In the movie, the gods and goddesses of Olympus constantly intervene in the events. The gods play a significant role in the lives of humans and have an influence on the outcome of events. They offer Percy and his friends various favors that give them the advantage when facing evil. In addition, they also provide Percy with warnings and advice along his adventure (Percy Jackson and the Olympians). Thus, there is a lot of divine intervention in the movie that helps Percy fulfill his mission.

Magical Weapons and Magical Creatures

There are many magical creatures and magical weapons featured in the movie. One of the most important magical objects is the lightning bolt that Percy must return to Zeus. The weapons presented in the movie have special powers and abilities which help the heroes in their battles. Another example of magical weapon is the shield belonging to the god of war Ares which is able to protect the bearer from any attack. Creatures, such as mermaids and giants, are used to help Percy and his friends in their adventures (Percy Jackson and the Olympians). Still, some creatures have divine powers and can attack Percy, but he is always able to find a way to defeat them.

Conclusion

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is an interesting movie about the adventures of Percy, who discovers that he is a descendant of gods of Greek mythology. The movie is unique in presenting numerous mythological elements, developing a strong hero archetype, accentuating divine intervention, and presenting magical weapons and magical creatures. It shows how Percy uses his archetypal characteristics to stand against evil and reach his goal.
